Abstract

The incidence of various serotpes of Shigella and Escherichia coli G. E. I. foun d, from 1970 to 1976, in faces of persons from São Paulo City and the resistance to antibiotics of the isolates are presented for various age groups. Shigella flexneri 2 was the most frequent serotype, followed by S. sonnei.
Shigellas were distinctly more frequent in children in the O to 1 year group, this
being particulary true with O to 28-day-old babies. This findings contrast with
those made in Central America. Among E. coZi G. E. 1. strains, 57,7% of the
isolates belanged to serotype 0111:B4; 10% belonged to 0125:B15 and 10% to 0119:B14. It was noted that E. coli 0111:B4 was sensitive only to gentamycin and to nalidixic acid, being resistant to ali other antibiotics tested. It is suggested that search for enterotoxic strains of E. coli be introduced in to the routine bacteriological examination done in public health laboratories, even though the present-day procedure is rather complex, while a standard, easy-to-carry technic is lacking.
