Abstract
Hand-Foot-Mouth Disease (HFMD) is a mild rash illness caused by
non-polio human enterovirus. Environmental, socioeconomic and
immunologic factors may lead to its circulation with seasonal pattern.
HFMD outbreaks are frequent in children under 5-year-old. During
enterovirus circulation and in HFMD outbreaks, severe manifestations
may occur such as meningitis, encephalitis, acute flaccid paralysis,
myocarditis, pericarditis, autonomic nervous system dysregulation,
shock and death. This guideline provides instructions concerning
aetiology, epidemiology, clinical features, diagnosis, treatment,
control measures and HFMD outbreaks management, as a resource
for assistance and surveillance health professionals from Sao Paulo
State.
