Abstract

 Toxoplasmosis is a disease, frequently asymptomatic, that can cause acute infections with fever,  lymphadenopathy, lymphocytosis and muscular pain during days and weeks. It may affect lung, hurt, liver, brain  and frequently cause chorioretinitis. It is caused by Toxoplasma gondii and transmitted by water and food  contaminated by parasite. Transplacental infections can occur if the pregnant woman acquires the infection  during the any period of gestation. Depending fetal age of infection, the common injuries can be abortion,  prematurity, low weight, chorioretinitis, jaundice, hepatomegaly and others. On December 8, 2006, the Hospital  das Clínicas, of FMUSP notified to the Center for Epidemiologic Surveillance one acute toxoplasmosis case,  occurred in the city of Guarujá, related to more five cases residents in the city of São Paulo, among then, a  pregnant woman. This report summarizes the findings of the outbreak investigation which linked the illness to the  ingestion of a raw meat dish named “steak tartar”. Educational and sanitary measures were developed to prevent  new cases.
