Abstract

Nosocomial Infections (NI) are important causes of morbidity and mortality. Surveillance is a central part of programs that  focus on reduction of NI incidence and severity. Statistical Process Control Charts (SPCC) are useful in determining the  stability of NI rates. We used data from Intensive Care Unit surveillance to draw SPCC for the main NI syndromes: Ventilator  Associated Pneumonia (VAP); Urinary Tract Infections (UTI); and Bloodstream Infections (BSI). The study comprised a period  from June 2004 through February 2006. Case-fatality rates (CFR) and the frequency of isolation of Gram-positive cocci (GPC)  and Gram-negative bacilli (GNB) were also evaluated.VAP rates remained under “statistical control”. Unexpected elevations  were found for BSI (November 2005),UTI (February 2005). CFR (May and August 2005) and GPC ( November 2004). SPCC  proved to be important tools for hospital epidemiologists.
