Abstract

Sucrose was fermented by 134 (59.8%) of the 224 strains of Corynebacterium diphtheriae. Using Elek's method, toxigenic and sucrose fermenting strains compased 58.9% of the total. Because of these results, a revision of the taxonomic criteria is suggested.
