Abstract

This study describes an outbreak of foodborne disease in nine persons who participated in a community lunch in Eldorado/SP, in February 2012. All of the patients presented the main symptoms of this disease as vomiting, sudoresis, abdominal pain, nausea, and colitis. The municipal health surveillance services of Eldorado sent the cooked rice and the chicken pancake to be analysed at Food Microbiology Laboratory, Centro de Laboratório Regional de Santos, Instituto Adolfo Lutz. Conventional methodologies were used, as recommended by the Compendium of Methods for Microbiological Examination of Foods. Coliforms bacteria and Escherichia coli (1.1 x 105 MPN/g), Staphylococcus aureus (5.6 x 109 CFU/g), Bacillus cereus (2.0 x 107 CFU/g) and Clostridium perfringens (5.0 x 104 CFU/g) were isolated. No Salmonella spp was found. By correlating the detected laboratory results with the patients with gastroenteritis, it is suggested the occurrence of an outbreak of foodborne disease. This investigation shows the importance of the joint-work conducted by the municipal health surveillance services and the laboratory of public health for elucidating the foodborne diseases outbreaks.
