Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate the contaminants occurrence as total arsenic, cadmium, chromium, lead and total inorganic mercury content in tissues samples of king weakfish (Macrodon ancylodon), mullet (Mugil liza), white mouth croaker (Micropogonias furnieri) and sardine (Sardinella brasiliensis), purchased during winter of 2009 and summer of 2010. The inorganic contaminants determination were performed by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP OES). The ranges of elements concentration obtained, in mg. kg-1 (wet weight), were: total As (<0.1-8.63); Cd (<0.01-0.287); Cr (<0.02-0.44); Pb (<0.02-2.92), and total Hg (<0.002-0.285). The As and Cr contents were above the maximum amounts established by the Brazilian legislation (1 and 0.1 mg kg-1) in 67% and 7% of analyzed samples, respectively. The sardine and white mouth croaker species were the mostly contaminated samples. This study showed that the king weakfish, mullet, white mouth croaker and sardine fish species were contaminated by total arsenic, chromium and lead. The highest arsenic contents were found in sardine species. In corvine species, the contaminants As, Cr and Pb were higher in the wintertime than summer season.
