Abstract

This work aims at assessing the occurrence of Giardia lamblia infection among children under 10 years old in the municipality of Chapadinha, Maranhão state, Brazil. The coproscopic data were analyzed between January 2007 and February 2008 according to the method of Hoffmann, Pons and Janer (Spontaneous Sedimentation) in the Central Laboratory of Chapadinha. A total of 623 stool samples were analyzed, being 102 positive for G. lamblia (16.4%), 376 negative (60.3%) and 145 (23.2%) positive for other enteroparasites. The lowest infections by G. lamblia were observed in children under one year old (6.8%) and the highest in the interval between 2 and 6 years, where 71.5% of the positive cases occurred in this age interval. The frequency of other enteroparasites increased progressively, mainly in children with more than 4 years. The Giardia infection pattern observed in Chapadinha is similar to the other localities, where the infection reaches a level and then decreases afterwards, unlike the other enteroparasitic infections.
