Abstract

The influence of cubiu on the glucose concentration in diabetic rats blood was evaluated. Diabetes was experimentally induced by injecting streptozotocin (40 mg/kg) into rat tail vein after a 24 hours fast. After 15 days, animals were selected according to their blood glucose concentration (values above 300 mg/dL),and distributed into completely randomized blocks of two groups composed of 10 mice each; the mice were fed with a casein - based diet (AIN, 93M), using two sources of alimentary fiber. The experimental study was done for 28 days, and blood samples were weekly collected from mice for performing glucose dosages. Mice that received the cubiu fiber presented reduced blood glucose value at the end of 4th week (224.4±85.5 mg/dL) when compared with control group (351.4±139.0 mg/dL). Such data suggest the influence of cubiu in reducing the glucose concentration in mice blood.
