Abstract

From February to August of 2002, the search for M. tuberculosis was performed among 74 inpatients from the Psychiatric Hospital of Goiás - Brazil. Mycobacteria were isolated from five (6.8%) patients, being four M. tuberculosis isolates and one M. chelonae. M. chelonae positive result on baciloscopy was observed in a sputum sample only. M. tuberculosis was isolated culture of clinical specimens from four smearnegative patients. Mycobacteria species were identified by means of conventional methods, mycolic acids analysis, and PCR technique. The most specific and sensitive method - PCR detected M. tuberculosis on a culture and M. chelonae was only identified by means of conventional methods. According to drug susceptibility profiles, all of four M. tuberculosis isolates were susceptible to isoniazid and riphampicin.
