Abstract

Toxoplasmosis is a protozoan disease of man caused by Toxoplasma gondii. In immunocompromised patients, toxoplasmosis is characterized by lesions of the central nervous system, which may lead to blindness and brain defects. The objective of the present investigation was to perform a retrospective study on the frequency of positive testing for anti-Toxoplasma gondii antibodies in celebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples, which where carried out during the period from January/2003 to November/2004. At Institute Adolfo Lutz- Regional Laboratory of Sorocaba. The analysed CSF samples were collected from HIV positive-patients with clinically suspected neurotoxoplasmosis who referred to the Conjunto Hospitalar of Sorocaba. Detection of anti-T.gondii IgG antibodies in CSF samples was performed by brans of indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA). Of 109 CSF samples selected for the study, 46 were from female subjects, and 63 from male patients, and the major age group was from 21 to 40 years old. No woman was pregnant. Among 46 female individual, 48% presented positive CSF samples for Toxoplasma gondii antibodies (TGABs), and 36,5% of positivity were detected in CSF samples from were patients. In 2003 and 2004 (until the studied date), the rates of positive TGABs in CSF samples were 61,5% and 38,5% respectively. In spite of the absence of TGABs in CFS samples from some HIV positive-patients without apparent clinical symptoms of neurotoxoplasmosis, the follow-up of these individuals will by relevant, as they might present low activity of toxoplasmosis in central nervous system. Thus, it will be opportune to perform a prospective follow-up study, including these patients, in order to evaluate the eventual occurrence of neurotoxoplasmosis reactivation in the near future.
