Abstract

The iodine content of 66 samples of marine salts from the most important Brazilian salinas was determined. There was used the method recommended by the 3rd Conference on Nutrition Problems in Latin America, which is based on the iodine oxydation with bromine and further titration of the iodate with sodium thiosulphate. The Brazilian common salts showed a low iodine content, ranged from 21 to 196 µg of iodine/l00 g of salt (arithmetical mean, 80.5; standard deviation, +/- 41.0; mode, 60 -70). The iodine content of crude and refined salt did not show significant deviation. Thus the low iodine content of the Brazilian salts emphasizes the necessity of the complete execution of the prophylaxis of endemic goiter.
