Abstract

The aims of this study were to define the territorial limits of groundwater nitrate contamination in urban
area of Presidente Prudente, SP - Brazil, to find out a correlation between this occurrence and the urbanization
development, and also to point out the potential sources of contamination. The investigation was based
on retrospective groundwater physical-chemical analysis from the data recorded in Instituto Adolfo Lutz
archives, and on the geostatistical treatment of analyses data by means of Surfer-Surface Mapping System
associated with the values interpolation by linear krigage method. These mapping data showed that
nitrate contamination zones were well defined, being located within the limits of an area which was urbanized
until 1962, and different sources of the contamination were indicated, including leaking sewers, leaching
from old pit-latrines and from diverse kinds of waste sites. The results also showed the incapability of
being remedied and evidenced the option made by several private groundwater exploiters in removing the
exceeding nitrate content from the wells water, by installing an ion-exchange resin system, which was
proved to be effective.
