Abstract

997 samples of pigments and colours for food packages were analysed for their arsenic, lead and cadmium contents, for the period 1982-1989. The levels for these contaminants showed 0.2% of samples with arsenic above the limits allowed by law, 5.4% with lead and 2.7% with cadmium. Although only few samples showed high levels of contamination, the contents of lead and cadmium found were very high and changed year by year. In this paper, authors suggest the brazilian legislation should change the limit accepted for cadmium contamination, from 0.2 to 0.01 % in weight.
