Abstract

Countcrimmunoelcctrophoresis (CIE) has been used to show the presence of
Neisseria meningitidis group B antigcn in 185 cerebrospina1 fluid (CSF) and/or 125 serum samples. From the CSF samples, 103 (55.7%) wcre only cu1ture positive and 36 (19.5%) showed only positive ClE reactions. In 34 (18.4%) of thesc samples both methods had positive results. Among patients who had negative CSF culture, ClE in CSF and/or serum contributed for the diagnosis of group B meningococcus disease in26. 70/" from which 99.1 % had already received previous antibacterial therapy. Considering lhe on1y positive results by ClE in serum, it was observcd a percentage of 5.6%. The contribution of ClE in CSF and/or serum was significant.
