Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the performance of the Ogawa - Kudoh decontamination and the Swab technique in Ogawa medium (OKM) compared to the traditional Petroff Methodology (PM) in Lowenstein - Jensen medium for the isolation of mycobacteria from pulmonary and extra-pulmonary clinica! specimens.779 samples frorn patients with clinical syntomps of pulmonary tuberculosis and/or mycobacterioses were studied. The positivity of PM and OKM was13,96% and 16,24%, respectively. OKM showed a sensitivity of 79% and a specificity of 94%. It was a!so observed a faster culture growth in OKM, and a lower contamination rate. According to the results obtained, simplicity and low cost of the method, we believe that it might be imp!anted as a routine method in Public Health Laboratory which usually present scarce human and material resources.
