Abstract
A clinical and etiological study of a case of herpetic encephalitis is presented. A brain biopsy was made during a temporal lobo tomy aimed at intracraneal decompression. Microscopic examination of sections of the right temporal lobe of the brain disclosed a viral encephalitis with intranuclear inclusion bodies ín astrocytes. Herpesvirus hominis type 1 was isolated and identified from the brain tissue and from the blood. Specific antibodies were found in the spinaI fluid bu t not in the bIood.
