Abstract

The main historical events of the operation of Instituto Adolfo Lutz (IAL), Central Public Health Laboratory of the State of São Paulo are briefly presented. The role of tlris Institution in tackling the State's publie health problems since the end of the 19th Century are reviewed. Approaches to the present-day important tasks sueh as participation in the basic medical care and in the epidemiological-sanitary surveillance are reported. The increasing importance of the network of the IAL regional laboratories is stressed. At the present time, these laboratories represent a main help in. oommunity medicine 'programa. The need of an accurate definition of the basic and applied research to be carried out by IAL is also stressed.
