Abstract
Epidemics of acute haemorrhagic conjunctivitis occurred in the São Paulo State limited to the sea coast areas in 1983 which was succeded by epidemics in other regions of the state in 1984. The present investigation presents data on the etiological aspects of conjunctivitis during the epidemic of 1984.Paired sera of 73 cases and conjunctival swabs of 179 patients living in different regions of São Paulo
state were examined for respectively, serology and virus isolation attempts. Neutralization test detected serologic conversion for EV -70 in 45,2% of patients examined while 19,2% had antibodies in the acute phase sera. Persons older than 20 years were the most affected by the virus. The proportion of positive cases in the age groups of 20-29, 30-39 and older than 40 were respectively, 70,6%, 55,6% and 72,7%. Adenovirus, herpes simples and EV -70 were isolated from the conjunctival secretion of seven, one and one patients, respectively. Despite adenovirus have been isolated of higher number of cases serologic tests did not detect any adenoviral infection, due to the unavailability or paired sera of persons from which adenoviruses were isolated. The results obtained confirrn the participation of EV-70 in the epidemic of 1984. During this period no evidence of neurological diseases were registred.
