Abstract

Serial quantitative cultures of fresh hornogenized sputum and transtracheal aspira te were made on the admission of 27 patients with infection of the lower respiratory tract. The patients had not received prior antimicrobial
treatment. A comparison of the results showed correlation when the germs were found in the sputum in concentrations greater than 10-8 per ml. This technique
is within the reach of most laboratories capable of identifying organisms causing bronchopulmonary infection and may find wide acceptance.
