Abstract

Milk samples from healthy lactating women, who had been supplemented with bovine milk serum protein
and receiving an adequate food regimens, were evaluated on protein composition and IgA concentration,
and compared with those data from control group. The effect of protein supplementation on protein and
IgA concentrations was investigated in milk samples from 90 nursing mother, who were supplemented with
14g of protein during the last trimester of pregnancy and with 20g at the first three months of lactation. The
protein contents in mother milk were determined at 30 (T30), 60 (T60) and 90 (T90) days of post-lactation.
IgA concentration was analyzed at 30 (T30) and 60 (T60) days of lactation. The average protein contents
in milk samples from supplemented were 1,22 g/dL at T30; 1,16 g/dL at T60 and 1,07 g/dL at T90, and
being 0,94 g/dL at T30; 0,79 g/dL at T60 and 0,79 g/dL at T90 in milk samples from control group. IgA
concentrations in milk from supplemented mothers were 109,1 mg/dL at T30; 94,4 mg/dL at T60, and in
control group were 72,8 mg/dL at T30 and 65,0 mg/dL at T60. The overall results demonstrated a positive
effect of proteins supplementation on human milk composition, when compared with the control group.
