Abstract

The present study aimed to identify the toxigenic potential of Aspergillus flavus and Fusarium verticillioides strains isolated from 57 samples of corn kernels , and 90 samples of soil at different maturity stages from regions of Capão Bonito and Ribeirão Preto, with regards to production of aflatoxins and fumonisins, respectively. The toxigenic potential analysis of 14 A. flavus strains revealed the presence of aflatoxins in 13 strains (92.9%) in concentration ranging from 10.47 to 482.58 µg/kg for aflatoxin B1, and from 2.9 to 132.5 µg/kg for aflatoxin B2. With reference to toxigenic potential of F. verticillioides strains, 27 (100%) produced fumonisins in concentration of 0.10 to 4,833 µg/g of fumonisin B1 , and 0.05 to 321 µg/g of fumonisin B2. The concomitant occurrence of A. flavus and F. verticillioides in corn field indicates the importance of an effective control of cultivation throughout the plant maturation stages.
