Abstract

Results for the levels of lead and cadmium determined by atomic absorption spectrophometry, in the livers and kidneys of 317 cattle from several States of Brazil are presented. The samples were collected in slaughterhouses by Federal Govermment. In 67 samples were found lead (06 in liver, 61 in kidneys) and for cadmium in 187 samples (02 in liver, 185 in kidneys). Only two samples (0,8%) were detected levels of cadmium above the action level. The mean for cadmium and lead in livers, in ppm were: 0.05 and 0.12 and in kidneys 0.23 and 0.15, respectively. The results showed that trace of cadmium occur with more frequency and highest concentration in the kidneys.
