Abstract

Physico-chemical analysis of filtered water from household filtration systems were compared witb one of unfiltered water in order to evaluate such systems. The determinations included
colour, turbidity, dried residue, pH, hardness, oxygen consumption, iron, nitrate, chloride and free chlorine. Improvement in colour and turbidity was observed in most of the cases, lhe taste also improved due to the retention of the free chlorine by the totality of filters analysed. However, in the filtered water was observed an increase of 70% and 61 % of dricd residue and hardness, respectively, some filters also caused an increase in oxygen consumption (30%) and nitrate concentration (12%) after the filtration.
