Abstract
From April1995 to December 1996,160 samples of chicken carcasses commercialized in the São José do Rio Preto area were studied. Salmonella serotyping and antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of all strains isolated were carried out. Eighty-seven (54,38%) out of 166 carcasses were Salmonella-positive with 18 serovars identified. The most frequent serovar was Salmonella Enteritidis (59,77%). Concerning to the antimicrobial susceptibility tests, 13,79% of the Salmonella isolates were resistant to the antimicrobial agents used. These findings show the high rate of chicken meat contaminated by Salmonella. Probab1y, this fact has facilitated the occurrence of many S. Enteritidis outbreaks in our area, taking into account the consumption of animal origin food, main1y from pou1try, by a 1arge number of peop1e.
