Abstract

The hemoglobin S has been considered a public heath disease due to its high frequency and morbidity. The development of screening methods is important to assist the clinic diagnosis and to help elaborate therapy measures. The peripheral blood of 836 samples were analyzed by the solubility test, the sickling test and the gel-centrifugation test. Twenty-eight samples were positive for hemoglobin S in the three tests analysed, disclosing the same sensibility and specificity for ali of them. However, the solubility test and the gel-centrifugation method were faster than the sickling test, besides requiring short technician training period.
