A autora descreve a metodologia baseada na reação em cadeia da polimerase (PCR) para identificação especifica do DNA de Mycobacterium leprae e apresenta uma revisão das estratégias relacionadas à escolha dos oligonucleotfdios iniciadores de síntese do DNA ("primers") e dos critérios de especificidade e sensibilidade necessários à utilização desse método em estudos clínicos e experimentais
