Resumo

A reação reversa ou inversa, bem estudada em certos centros de pesquisa, continua ainda mal conhecida, contestada e mesmo negada. Este desconhecimento tem sido uma das causas das dificuldades na compreensão do mecanismo das nevrites hansenianas. Pretendeu-se respigar a evolução dos conceitos sobre essa questão desde Souza Lima e Souza Campos (1940), depois Tajiri (1955), atingindo o conceito atual de reação I de Jopling, que compreende a reação "up grading" e 'down grading", culminando-se por apresentar uma interpretação, cujo mecanismo permite melhor compreensão da fenomenologia clínica e conduta terapêutica mais adequada.
