Abstract

A three-year-old child has received a clinical diagnostic of multibacillary leprosy and has initiated polichemotherapy, developing erythematous infiltrated plaques, with foveolar aspect, disseminated after two months. The child’s mother had received a lepromatous leprosy diagnostic a year ago and in that occasion the child received the BCG vaccine. The clinical reevaluation and the complementary exams from the child confirmed the diagnosis of borderline leprosy with reverse reaction, bacilloscopy 3+, and granular bacilli. This case shows some peculiarities, such as the presence of multibacillary leprosy in this age range, an uncommon fact due to the long period of incubation of the disease, as well as demonstrating that the BCG vaccine has not modified the natural evolution of the disease, as the child presented the disease in an already advanced stage. The authors discuss some aspects of the leprosy in children, e.g. epidemiology, risk factors and diagnosis
resources, and reinforce the importance of an early diagnostic in children who have contact with leprosy carriers, as well as the regular management and incapacity prevention measures.
