Abstract
A 19-year old female wi th Virchowian hanseniasis, frequently suffering from hansenic reactions of the erythema nodosum type, died suddenly after intense chest pains, dyspnea and vomiting. The necropsy showed a partially organized thrombosis of the lower vena cava, obliterating thromboembolism of the pulmonary artery, congestive hepatomegaly and "cor pulmonale". None of the usual causes of phlebotrombosis was present. Microscopical examinations together wi th immunopathological considerations lead to the possibility that the pulmonary embolism might be related to the hansenic reaction (Erythema nodosum).
