Abstract

A patient is reported who 10 years ago developed signs and symptoms of a symmetric arthritis which envolved progressively. Since that time she was diagnosed as having rheumatoid arthritis in several rheumatologic clinics. In February of 2002 she was seen in a private clinic by one of the authors, who suspected leprosy because she presented besides the joint lesions with diffuse infiltration and discrete nodules and papules on her extremities. She was referred to the Instituto Lauro de Souza Lima, the
diagnos i s wa s c onf i rmed and th e t r e a tme nt wi th multidrugtherapy for multibacillary patients was initiated. The authors discuss the possibilities of the patient having only leprosy or a combination of rheumatoid arthritis and leprosy.
