Abstract

Positivity, frequency of mixed infections, age group and anti-microbe resistance were examined in th'e resulta of 5,360 bacterial cultures of the blood of patients from an infectious disease hospital and two pediatric hospitaIs from São Paulo municípali ty during th e period of 1979 to 1982. Blood cultures were positive in 19.70% of the specimens, of which, 18.06% showed a single bacteria while 1.64% showed more than one. In the single infection cases, Salmonella typhimurium predominated with 24.40% of the positive specimens while Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella typhi were found in 17.67% and 11.15%, respectively. In the mixed-infection specimens, Klebeiella p-neurn on iae was found in 20.91% of the specimens, S. typhimurium and Escherichia coli in 18.38% and 14.28%, rsspectively, these .bacteria being associated among them or with other bacteria. Shigella flexneri serotype 2 was found in two specirnens, serotype 3 in two specim ens, and serotype 4 in one blood. Marked resistance to antimicrobial substances was shown by S. typhimurium, Peeudomonae aeruginosa and K. pneumoniae, Ali isolates of S. typhi were sensitive to chloramphenicol.
