Abstract

Morphological alterations due to chlamydial infection were described in 40 cervical smears selected from a total of 30,000 cervical smears examined at the Pathology Division of Instituto Adolfo Lutz, in the period of july 1983 to june 1985. Our findings lead to the conclusion that smears fixed in ethanol-ether and stained by Papanícolaou method, in the usual schedule for
detection of cervical cancer, were quite suitable for detection of Chlamydia-iridueed changes, The main alte.rations were inclusion bodies inside vacuolar structures in the cytoplasm of metaplastic endocervical cells and parabasal or intermediate squamous cell.
