Leprosy elimination in Barra Mansa municipality: a local experience

Abstract

The goal to eliminate of leprosy as problem of public health, has taken some Brazilian cities to develop strategies that promote the effectivity of the principies of the SUS of the universality, decentralization, integrality and equíty. The Barra Mansa city, Rio de Janeiro State, decides from 2001 to develop Annual Campaigns of Acceleration of the Elimination of Leprosy, adhering to the project of the National Advice Municipal Secretaries of Health - CONASEMS to reduce, in the Brazilian cities, the load of the illness for less than one case in each ten thousand inhabitants. They had been promoted in the years of 2001, 2002 and 2003 activities of qualification of human resources, concomitant of activities of spreading of the new image of Hansen's disease and the universality of the programmatical actions in the basic net of health.
