Abstract
Foodborne disease outbreaks have been considered one of the most widespread problem of the contemporary world. Staphylococcal intoxication has been one of the common disease, which the actual occurrence in many countries has still been unknown. The aim of this study was to report the occurrence of Staphylococcus aureus associated foodborne disease outbreaks confirmed by means of laboratory methodologies, in the region of São José do Rio Preto, SP from December 2001 to April 2003. Eight outbreaks were analyzed by means of epidemiological inquiry and bacteriological methods. Of them only 50% were confirmed by means of laboratory examination, and Staphylococcus aureus was identified in all of them. Bakery products, such as candies and other groceries were the target products. According to the data from epidemiological inquiries, the total number of affected individuals was 52
(being 13 the average of affected persons per outbreak), and seven were hospitalized (13,5%). The median incubation periods ranged from 30 minutes to 3 hours. Diarrhea and vomit were the most common and prevalent symptoms in all outbreaks, and fever was also observed in three (75%) of them.
